• SOIL PROFILE DESCRIPTION - OTERO SERIES <br />The Otero series consists of deep, somewhat excessively drained soils on <br />foot slopes and uplands. These soils formed in eolian sand and <br />alluvium. Slope is 1 to 12 percent. The average annual precipitation is <br />11 to 15 inches, sad the average annual air temperature is 48 to 54 <br />degrees F. <br />Typical pedon of Otero sandy loam, 1 to 9 percent slopes, 250 feet east <br />and 1,300 feet north of the southwest corner of Section 2, T. 28 S., <br />R. 64 W. <br />Al-0 to 7 inches; light brownish gray (lOYR 6/2), sandy loam, dark <br />grayish brown (lOYR 4/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very <br />friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; mildly alkaline; clear smooth <br />boundary. <br />• C1-7 to 20 inches; pale brow (lOYR 6/3) sandy loam, brown (lOYR 5/3) <br />moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very <br />friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; calcareous; moderately alkaline; <br />clear smooth boundary. <br />C2ca-20 to 60 inches; pale brow (lOYR 6/3) sandy loam, brow (lOYR <br />5/3) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few <br />fine soft masses of lime; calcareous; moderately alkaline. <br />Calcareous material is at a depth of 0 to 10 inches. 0 to 15 percent <br />coarse fragments throughout the profile. <br />The Al horizon is light brownish gray, grayish brow, pale brown, or <br />brow. It is sandy loam or fine sandy loam. It is mildly or moderately <br />alkaline. The C horizon is sandy loam or fine sandy loam. Calcium <br />carbonate equivalent ranges from less than 1 percent to 4 percent. <br />L J <br />
