• SOIL PROFILE DESCRIPTION - LOUVIERS SERIES <br />The Louviers series consists of shallow, well drained soils on side <br />slopes. These soils formed in material weathered from noncalcareous <br />clayey shale. Slope is 10 to 65 percent. The average annual <br />precipitation is 14 to 16 inches, and the average annual air temperature <br />is 48 to 54 degrees F. <br />Typical pedon of a Louviers very channery clay loam in <br />Louviers-Travessilla complex, 3 to 25 percent slopes, 300 feet north and <br />1,200 feet west of the southeast corner of Section 35, T. 27 S., <br />R. 67 N. <br />Al--0 to 3 inches; brown (lOYR 5/3) very channery clay loam, dark brown <br />(lOYR 4/3) moist; moderate very fine granular structure; slightly hard, <br />friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 40 percent sandstone <br />fragments neutral; clear smooth boundar•. <br />• <br />AC--3 to 10 inches; light olive brown (2.SY 5/4) clay loam, light olive <br />brown (2.SY 5/4) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very <br />hard, friable, sticky and plastic; 15 percent soft shale fragments <br />neutral; clear smooth boundary. <br />C1--10 to 16 inches; light olive brown (2.SY 5/4) clay loam, light olive <br />brown (2.5Y 5/4) moist; massive; very hard, friable, sticky and plastic; <br />25 percent soft shale fragments neutral; clear smooth boundary. <br />C2r-16 inches; light olive brow (2.SY 5/4) noncalcareous shale. <br />Bedrock is at a depth of 10 to 20 inches. The control section is 35 to <br />50 percent clay. Soft shale fragments generally is less than 5 percent <br />but ranges from 0 to 25 percent. The A horizon is brow or grayish <br />brown. Zt is slightly acid, neutral, or mildly alkaline. The C horizon <br />• is light olive brown, olive brow, or dark brow. Teature is clay loam, <br />clay, or shaly clay loam. It is neutral or mildly alkaline. <br />
