<br />COi1CLUSION <br />The vegetation types in the permit areas of the t1ax~~ie11 and <br />Allen Mines ~~iere inventoried for herbaceous cover and production, and <br />density of shrubs, trees and saplings. The results ~,vere used to <br />indicate dominant species in each vegetation type. <br />Dominants in the grassland type were Bouteloua rag cilis, <br /> <br />Artemisia frigida, Carex eleocharis, and Xanthocephalum sarothrae. <br />Dominants in the pinyon-juniper type were Pinus edulis, Juniperus <br />scopulorum, Artemisia frigida, Astraaalus striatus, Astragalus flex- <br />uosus, and Townsendia eximia. <br />Dominants in the Ponderosa pine-Douglas fir-oak type were <br />Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, uercus gambelii, Carex spp., <br />Bouteloua curtipendula, Danthonia aP rryi, and perennial forbs. <br />Dominants in the Ponderosa pine-oak type were Pinus ponderosa, Pinus <br />edulis, Quercus gambelii, Danthonia arr~i, Carex sp., perennial <br />forbs, Thalictrum fendleri, and Eouteloua curtipendula. Dominants in <br />the o-~illow Carr type were Salix exi ua, Artemisia dracunculus, Linaria <br />vulgaris, Carex and Juncus spp., and Cirsium vul are. <br />In all cases, the dominants clearly reflected the true charac- <br /> <br />teristics of the vegetation types. A combination of gro~vth habits, <br />soils, elevation, and moisture affected the cover, production and <br />density of species in each type. <br /> <br />16 <br />
