• 3.0 RESOURCES, STRUCTURES, FACILITIES
3.1 LAND USE
U.S.D.A. Soil Survey maps, topographic maps, and
available air photos were reviewed to evaluate land use cf
the proposed long-term lease area. The air photos only
partially covered the area of study. The U.S.D.A. Soil
Survey of Paonia Area, Colorado (1980) provided information
on crops, natural vegetation and wildlife. Land uses have
been verfied by limited field checking by GEO-HYDRO.
Uses made of the study area, or to which it is suited,
include:
o Rangeland/Wildlife Habitat-Recreation
o Grazing pasture/meadow
o Forestland
o Private Structures
o CWI Mine-related Structures
o Abandoned Mines/Prospects
T}i° distribution of these units is shown on Plate 9.
• o Rangeland/Wildlife Habitat
The major portion of the study area nay be classified
under this category. Rangeland areas are suitable for
grazing of livestock, primarily cattle in the study area.
Areas in this category not qualifying as rangeland consist
of those which have ground slopes too steep to allow
effective grazing or rock outcrops. Rangeland areas support
approximately 1,000 to 2,000 pounds of vegetation (air-dry)
per acre of land in a normal year. These areas are grazed
by wildlife as well as livestock.
The wildlife habitat of this category attracts
antelope, pule deer, quail, grouse and chukar.
o Grazinq Pasture/Meadow
The cat=gory consists of mostly isolated areas of
natural meadow or maintained pasture. Western wheatgrass is
the predominant species in most of these areas. They are
primarily used For grazing of livestock, and may produce up
to x,000 pounds of vegetation per acre in a normal year.
Stoc~ ponds are present in Host of these areas.

_ 11' _
