3
indicate values that exceed either the Numeric Protective Level (NPL) or the
Early Warning Indicator (EWI) level established under the original MLRB 112
permit. Charts of this data are presented in the following pages for reference.
Generally, the outlying data fluctuates very little from the NPL or EWI. In many
instances, the variations observed are similar to natural phenomenon. Dissolved
barium flags just above the baseline established levels in a number of the
monitoring wells. In the production stream dissolved barium is also present in
generally the same concentrations as observed in the monitoring wells. Because
other indicator constituents are not also flagging higher than baseline levels
along with the elevated barium and because barium is indicated in a number of
wells representing several aquifer locations in an intermittent random pattern,
including up gradient control locations, it is thought to be more of a natural
phenomenon or related to drilling and not linked to solution mining activity.
Monitoring for dissolved barium will continue.
The water level data represented in the chart for Well 21-3A shows a drop of
approximately 10 feet of elevation in the beginning of the third quarter 2004. It is
not possible to identify conclusively what may have caused the substantial drop
but there are a couple of incidents that have been considered.
A drilling rig was on location at production well 20-12 working on the well in an
attempt to identify and repair the area where the tubing was thought to be
damaged, This well is up gradient from the 21-3 multiple completion well just
opposite the former test mine pad.
In addition to activity at the production well, there was an unintentional overtlow
of dissolution surface water from the tubing used to sample well 21-3D which is
completed in the same casing (multiple completion well 21-3D, 21-3B, 21-3A,
and 21-3U). In early June 2004, the sampling line from the lower aquifer
dissolution surface overflowed into the top of the well casing containing all 4
