•
SOIL LOSS COMPARISON -COAL RIDGE NO. 1 MINE
RECLAIMED VERSUS BASELINE CONDITIONS
The following calculations are presented to determine if untreated drainage from the reclaimed Coal
Ridge No. 1 Mine Sagebrush Community is contributing suspended solids to streamflow or runoff
outside the permit area in excess of premining levels.
The baseline data for comparison are considered to be those conditions that exist in the reference area
located east of the reclaimed mine site. The October 2000 vegetation study (Appendix 3.6-6) presents,
in Table C3, the vegetation conditions that exist in the reference area as follows:
Baseline
Total Vegetation Cover 49.1
Perennial Cover
Grasses, etc. 22.5%
Forts 0.0%
Shrubs 26.4%
Trees 0.1%
Other 0.1%
Total Perennial Cover 49.1%
Litter 34.0%
Perennial Cover+Litter 83.1%
Canopy (Trees and Shrubs) 26.5%
•
The condition of the reclaimed Coal Ridge No. 1 Mine Site is taken from the October 2000 vegetation
study (Appendix 3.6-5). The results of this vegetation report, presented in Table C3 of the report, are as
follows:
Reclaimed
Total Vegetation Cover 44.4%
Perennial Cover:
Grasses, etc. 23.5%
Forts 18.3%
Shrubs 2.6%
Trees 0.1%
Other 0.0%
Total Perennial Cover 44.4%
Litter 39.5%
Perennial Cover +Litter 83.9%
Canopy (Trees and Shrubs) 2.6%
The Universal Soil Loss Equation will be used to calculate the soil loss from the reclaimed mine site and
the baseline conditions to determine if untreated drainage from the reclaimed mine site is contributing
suspended solids in excess of premining levels.
The following sediment volume calculation is prepared in accordance with U. S. Department of
Agriculture, Technical Notes, Agronomy Note ;350, dated January, 1977.
4-68ii
06/01
