At 2153-ft below ground surface (bgs), about 1:00 a.m. on March 3, 1998, while retrieving a core run, the drill crew noticed a higher than normal pressure reading on the drilling fluid pressure gage. Gas also began to vent as bubbles around the core hole. The drill crew shut down all the equipment and vacated the drill location. The methane gas continued to vent and was ignited by an undetermined source. The fire continued for several hours, destroying the rig, the support equipment, and the core. The drill crew was not injured. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Rio Blanco County Sheriffs Department were notified within the hour.
