Moyo and Assoelafes, LC
• circulating and which are dependent on seasonal recharge and almost all of these springs
periodically go dry. Because of the wider spatial distribution of the Barren Member springs
there are fewer redundant springs than in the alluvial, mantle cover and landslide group.
Additionally, a few of the Barren Member springs have the potential to discharge from
groundwater systems which are in hydraulic communication wi[Ir near- surface or near-
outcrop coal seams. Therefore, most of the Barren Member springs should remain in the
monitoring plan. Although there are no anticipated water quality impacts from mining on
Barren Member spring discharges, nor has any be detected, water quality monitoring should
remain part of the plan to demonstrate that such impacts have not occurred.
Recommended Changes:
• Spring G-8 should be eliminated from the plan because it is redundant with G-7.
2.3 Surface Water Sites
Discussion and Recommendations:
Two surface water sites, Upper Gribble Gulch and West Gulch east of Horse Gulch, should
be removed from the monitoring plan because they are continually dry.
•
Evaluation of the West Elk Mine Monitoring Plan
29 January 1999
Page 11
