Mayo and Assoclafes, LC
• Water qualities of spring discharges are the result of aquifer lithology and are not related to
mining activities.
Recommended Changes:
Spring 1 ~-2 should be eliminated from the plan because it has a very low maximum
discharge rate and is in the same general location as Barren Member spring 15-1. Spring G-
12 should be eliminated because it is redundant with G-14 and G-24, both of which are
decreed springs. Spring G-26B should be eliminated because it is redundant with G-26A.
Springs G-36, G-37, G-38, G-39, G-40, G-41, G-42, G-46, G-47, G-48 should be eliminated
because they are redundant with the other springs in [he Jumbo Mountain cluster. Springs
10-1, E10-2, E10-3, E10-4 and E15-3 should be eliminated because they are essentially
• seeps, are clustered closely together and they are not situated such that they can provide
meaningful information regarding potential impacts due to mining. Annual laboratory water
yuality analyses should be eliminated from several of the springs as shown on Table 2, except
for those parameters required by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board for Coal
Mining regulation 2.05.6(3)(b)(iv).
2.2.2 Barren Member Springs
Discussion:
The current monitoring plan includes 8 Barren Member springs (Table lb). These springs
tend to have a wider spatial distribution than do alluvial, mantle cover, and landslide springs.
All of the Barren Member springs issue from groundwater systems that are shallow
•
Evaluation of the West Elk Mine Monitoring Plan
29 January 1999
Page 10
