Twen[ymile Coal Company: Fish Creek & Rail Load Out
U.S. Waters inventory & Wetland Delineation
~ • intermittent streams), mudf]ats, sandflats, wetlands, sloughs, prairie potholes, wet
I meadows, playa lakes, or natural ponds" (40 CFR 230.3(s)(3).
The presence or absence of hydrologic indicators was used in identifying
Waters of the United States. Visual or circumstantial evidence of surface water flow
includes topographic type, shelving, vegetation breaks, scoured bed, recent alluvial
I deposition, and high water marks. The locations of Waters of the United States
were observed in the field and recorded on site topographic maps.
The survey of Raters of the United States and subsequent wetland
delineation was performed in two stages. First, existing and historic information for
the site was reviewed. The second stage involved conducting inventory and
delineation fieldwork, and finally report preparation.
Topographic maps were evaluated for the presence or potential presence of
I Waters of the United States. The Soil Survey for Routt County was obtained and
reviewed. The potential distribution of local hydric soils was determined from this
I • list. Local watersheds and related hydrologic conditions were assessed through an
evaluation of topographic maps covering the Fish Creek and Rail Road sites and
I adjacent areas. National Wetland Inventory maps were reviewed for specific
habitats that potentially exist within or immediately adjacent to the project area.
i Known and potential Waters of the United States were identified on
4 topographic maps of the area. A preliminary visual survey of the area was then
conducted to confirm the presence or absence of Waters of the United States.
All areas qualifying as Waters of the United States were evaluated for the
presence of wetlands. A routine wetland survey and delineation was performed as
described in the Department of the Army's Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation
Manual (Environmental Laboratory, 1987). Some atypical conditions were
encountered within the area, primarily being associated with past ranching
activities and modification/construction of stream channels by past m;n;ng activities.
Standard wetland delineation Form 1 was filled in for all sites. Conditions
• encountered on the site were considered normal.
Habitat Management, Inc. 3 7/20/01
