RECEIVED
Rub 3932.6fOt- BA.O
fa)
The quarrying of the monolithic sandstone bed
shall be accomplished in three vertical stages, or
benches, for each of the East Side and West Side
areas. The two azeas are roughly divided by a pre-
existing, un-reclaimed sandstone quarry, mined
already for about a third of the depth of the
"Dakota sandstone" caprock sedimentary bed.
Both FixsrBENCaES of the East and West Sides
(approx. floor elevation 6,490) wilt be extracted
before beginning the SECOND BENCHES, in order
to be able to utilize the temporary pit floors for
processing and stockpiling. Rock material to be
mined shall be drilled and shot to specified rough
size, then sorted and piled by a tracked bulldozer
to rip rap (over-size) and crusher-sized piles. A
wheeled front-loader shall be used to toad the
crusher intake hopper, and to place piles of sorted
rip rap which will pushed over the south edge of
the mesa to a rip rap stockpiling and dispensing
area on the north side of Kernan (McElmo Creek)
Canyon at the foot of the mesa slope.
Crushed and screened (sized) rock and reject-fines
will be conveyed to stockpiles by means of belted
conveyors and stackers, and sometimes by front-
loader. Processing and stockpiling of aggregate
products will be initially performed both within
the pre-existing quarry excavation and on the un-
mined mesa top to the west of the quarry.
lnf
The in-place thin surface soils cannot be
practically salvaged with available equipment in
any quantity for post mining reclamation
spreading. Woody vegetation shall be stripped by
bulldozer and disposed of by burning. Earthwork
is relatively minimal due to the very shallow soils
at the site.
f
No surface watercourses are involved at the
excavation and processing sites since the
JAN 19 2006
Division of Minerals and Geology
MINING PLAN
ExHisir D
extraction is into the gently sloping monolithic
mesa caprock. Incumbent rainfall shall be
diverted to a low portion of the current process
azea or worked out pit for retention and
percolation into the soils.
ca,
The initial extraction "shot" will extend the pre-
quarry toward the north permit/property boundary
and extend the separation of the East Side from
the West Side areas. Nfining of the first 12-foot
deep elevation, or bench then will be completed
for the East Side, beginning at its southwest
corner, except that a 25-foot setback from the
south rim of the mesa shall be maintained to leave
a berm of natural rock in-place along the south rim
of the mesa.
Each extraction explosive shot will employ a
workable vertical face of approximately 250 feet
long and 135 feet wide which shall be 'drilled and
shot' about 12 vertical feet deep into the caprock
(to approximately the floor elevation of the pre-
quarry for the FltrsT BENCH). Following
processing of the first several "shots" north of the
pre-quarry, successive shots (with processing)
back into the caprock to the east and north permit
boundaries (at their IS-foot set-back) will
follow with the typical three-quarter acre shots.
The final shots at the property boundaries (15-ft
set-back) shall be drilled to incorporate a roughly
quarter-to-one ('/4-H 1-~ final backwall,
eventually having 6- to 12-foot wide horizontal
benches for each 12-foot depth of slope, for a
staggered-bench backwall effect.
A process/stockpile yazd of 2 to 3 acres shall be
utilized, at first, adjacent to the west edge of the
previous quarry, and then gradually moved into
the worked-out Ftnsr BENCH (elevation) of the
East Side azea of the new quarry as extraction
there provides more work space.
1/fYZp18 -13- D1N01f2App1 NINOMMSN SAN03TONE
