r ~ p-q
The third step in the reclamation process will begin when
mining is completed. The overburden stored in berms to the
north and south of the phase 5 mining area will be back-
filled and graded to a 3:1 or flatter slope on three sides.
As noted previously, the floor of the mine and the final
grade will decline slightly to the west in order to pre-
vent excessive run-off down the benches to the east. The
benches will also be backfilled with overburden to a 3:1
or flatter grade to a minimum depth of 12". Distribution
of all topsoil will be done as part of the seedbed prepa-
ration.
1) Seedbed Preparation
When the topsoil is first stockpiled for future use, it
will be shaped to allow seeding with a grass drill. The
seed mixture to be planted will be predominantly intro-
duced grasses such.-as crested wheatgrass r fairway crested
and about~l0%~e-1=~Q3~sweetcloy~z,rPt"will be seeded at a ~VG
rate of about 21bs LS/ac. in order to assure coverage
and to prevent erosion. We will follow SCS recommendations.
When mining is completed and prior to distribution of top-
soil, the entire seedbed area will be scarified to a depth
of 12 - 15" to provide better cohesion between the topsoil
and overburden. Following final distribution of topsoil at
a depth of 6 - 8" and compaction, seeding will be done with
a grass drill. (Topsoil preserved from 7.4 acres in phases
4 & 5.at'a depth of 12" will provide 113+% of requirements
if distributed 8" deep for all areas backfilled.)
2 Seeding & Seed Mixture
Weather permitting, seeding will be done after October 1st.,
when the ground is too cool for seed germination, but before
May 1st., in order to take advantage of optimum moisture
conditions and to get a headstart on annual weeds.
The following grass seed mixture has been developed in
consultation with the USDA-SCS Office serving Gunnison
County. It is intended to seed at a rate of 40 PLS/sgft..
Species $~~~}0~5~e %of Mix ~~PLS/ac x 9.9 Tota14~ ~,
~~
CrestedldG. 10 30 3.0 30 3~
Smooth Brome 13 30 3.9 39 2 % '~~ ~T''
Arizona Fescue 4.5 20 0.9 9 ? i
Indian Rice G. 12.5 10 1.2 12 /~
Y1.SweetClov. 7.0 10 0.7 7 °'
/ V
9.7 97
Source: USDA-SCS Gunnison District Office ~~~
