3.85 EROS~oa coa„eAl_ t-,aa R.:k F~n» Cwr.~y A.ra-)J
• EXCESSIVE RILL AND GULLY PLAN
Since Northern Coal Company was careful to properly compact the
reclaimed areas, spread adequate topsoil and re-seed and mulch
diligently, it is not expected that excessive rills and gullies
will form.
The re-established channel at the Rienau 112 minesite is not
considered a gully. Technical revision 02 allows downcutting of
this channel to 24 inches. A cross-section of the undisturbed
channel immediately above the minesite is enclosed. Also enclosed
is a cross-section of the re-established channel approximately
midway up the reclaimed slope. As is seen from the
cross-sections, the channel on the reclaimed slope is much more
shallow and mild. The reclaimed channel should be allowed to cut
24 inches in a configuration similar to that shown far the
undisturbed channel. If the sidewalls become too steep, filling
in , placement of erosion control material or regrading will be
performed. In any case, the channel configuration will be
maintained .
At all other locations on the reclaimed area, the following
measures will be taken for rills and gullies over nine inches in
• depth
(1) If rills and gullies occur an areas too steep for machinery,
they will either be filled in by hand with shovels and rakes or
partially filled in, with placement of small dams at regular
intervals. The gully will then be seeded and mulched according to
the approved reclamation plan. This method has been used at other
reclamation sites in Colorado with good success because the dams
trap moisture uphill in the gully causing seeds in the mulch to
sprout. The resulting vegetation anchors the ground and causes a
natural filling of the gully without any adjacent disturbance.
Where complete filling is done, the area will be mulched and
seeded according to the approved reclamation plan.
(2) If rills and gullies occur on mild slope areas, and the
extent necessitates a tractor, a small garden tractor with a
field cultivator and/or rear blade will be used. The use of this
small tractor will keep disturbance to adjoining areas to a
minimum. If the area to be filled in is too wet, reclamation work
will have to wait until conditions are dry enough so as not to
leave ruts and harm vegetation. If the rills and gullies are not
extensive, manual labor may be used as described in (1) above. In
either case, the re-worked areas will be re-seeded and mulched
• according to the approved reclamation plan.
C -5 I
7i~/~~ ~;i~~~
