42.04 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR IINDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES --
_ MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR INFORMATION ON ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES.
2,04.3 General Requirements: Site Description and Land Use Information.
(2) (b) (i) (Cont'd.)
soils are unsuited for cropland due to surface
stoniness and slope.
Additional information on present and potential
productivity of the land within the permit area
can be found in the Vegetation Appendix in Vol-
ume 9A.
(ii) The productivity of the proposed permit area
before mining is set forth in detail within the
Vegetation Appendix, Volume 9A.
(3) (a) Numerous large and small coal mines have operated in
(b) the North Fork Valley since before the turn of the cen-
(c) tury. The Orchard Valley Mine initiated its operations
(d) in the "D" coal seam, the uppermos[ mineable seam at
this location. Previous mines on the fee portion of
this same property operated in the "B", or lowest mine-
able coal seam. The Black Diamond Mine operated ap-
• proximately one-half mile west of the Orchard Valley
Mine from 1909 to 1917 (see Map 9-1). The Cowan and
Converse Mines also operated on the Pavlisick fee pro-
perty 350 yards east of the Orchard Valley Mine from
approximately 1913 to 1935. The Dorrance Mine, located
on another fee coal property about 1/2 mile northeast
of the Converse Mine, was operated for several years
during the early 1900's in the uppermost "B" coal
seam.
These mines were small "wagon mines" used to supply the
Local market with heating coal. The mines were not au-
tomated; they used pick and shovel labor and mules for
haulage. The underground areal extent of these mines
is not known, but must have been very small due to the
limited tonnage reportedly sold.
The Farmer's Mine, located 1 1/2 miles northwest of the
Orchard Valley Mine in Section 17, T13S, R91W of the
6th P.M., was started by Paonia area farmers in the
late 1800's for use by townsfolk, in [he schools, and
in the Paonia power plant. The Demons Brothers pur-
chased the mine in 1959 and operated it until 1965 when
. Revised 12/26/84
Added 07/13/87
Revised 10/01/87
9
