The up-
per "D" seam was mined by the pick-and-shovel method in
the earlier years. Later, hand drilling and explosives
~oere utilized. Hauling was by mules and four-horse
wagon teams. The extent of the Emmons Arothers' Mine
is approximated on the 5-Year Mine Plan (Map ;12-4) in
Volume 2.
(e) Coal mining has been occurring in the vicinity of the
Orchard Valley Mine since the early 1900's. Prior to
this, the land probably lay idle due to the steepness
of the slopes.
(f) The abandoned Black Diamond, Cowan, Converse, Dorrance,
and Farmer's Mines are shown Map 9-1 in Volume 9. No
records on the areal extent of previous disturbance or
reclamation of these mines are available. Other than
rock debris at the portal areas and a few remnants of
• rail tipples and other mine facilities, the areal ex-
tent of the former disturbance is not evident. The
disturbance at each site appears to be less than ten
acres.
(4) Delta County, in which the Orchard Valley Mine is located,
does not have a comprehensive land use plan or land use clas-
sification system at this time.
See the discussions in Section 2.04.3 (2)(a).
.
