Box 3609
Grand ]unction, CO A1502
RE: Adequacy Letter, Colona Pit, File No. M-94-005, Montrose County
Dear Mr. McGehee:
~~~~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCE
Rop Rome.
Covenvm
Ren $ala+ar
F.c:mme Gireanr
mur hael B La+l;
Dn-swn Okego~
In order to satisfy the requirements of the Mined Land Reclamation Act and the Mineral Rules
and Regulations the below noted concerns need to be addressed:
f 1. You did not indicate your choice of post-mining land use on page 3 of the application.
Please submit a corrected copy of page 3 with the selected post-mining land use for this
operation.
/2. The application states that a portable asphalt batch plant will be situated at the site as
required by the prevailing market. You need to submit spill containment data (eg. the
size of the plant base, thickness of any impervious base layer, the dimension of the
spill containment berm, etc.) and your cleanup contingency plan for accidental spills at
the plant.
+~3. Need a narrative regarding stabilization of the topsoil stockpiles. If the topsoil is not
going [o be replaced within one growing season the stockpile sideslopes should be
graded to 3:1 or less. The topsoil stockpiles should be vegetated with one of the
species of your approved seed mix.
r/4. You need to provide a seed mix in your reclamation plan or, if you are going [o use
the mix recommended by the Shavano Soil Conservation District (which is acceptable),
you should note it in your response.
-~5. Your proposed 2:1 highwall slopes may, or may not, be stable enough to support
vegetation. 3:1 slopes would have a better chance of supporting vegetation, would
allow farm equipment to traverse it and would be much easier for farm animals to walk
over it. I would like you to commit to reducing the highwalls at [Iris operation to 3:1
slopes.
