TRAFFIC Ih1PACT
•
DATA COLLECT IOW
Traffic Counts
A traffic count by portable traffic counter was made on SH 133 from
Monday, September 15, 1980, to Tuesday, September 23, 7980, inclusive. As
- shown in Figure 1, the portable traffic counter was located approximately
0.2 miles east of the intersection of SH 187 (also Stevens Gulch Road on
the north leg of the intersection). During the period of the count, no
special or out-of-the-ordinary traffic event was known to occur.
In addition to the count by portable counter, a classification count
was made at the same location on SH 133. The results of this count are
• summarized in Table 1. The count revealed a percentage of trucks of
18.]% with approximately 11.9% of the total vehicle mix being combination
trucks. Of the combination trucks, 168 were noted to be coal trucks
_ (Savage Brothers, Inc.) from the Orchard Valley Mine.
Since the portable traffic counter registered one vehicle for every
two axle crossings, the classification count was used to develop a factor
to adjust the counts for 5-axle combination trucks. A factor of 0.85
was calculated and used to adjust the raw count.
The counter was set to obtain directional counts on SH 133. Figure 2
graphically shows the directional counts for the week of 9/16/80 to 9/22/80,
inclusive, adjusted for combination trucks. Total hourly counts on SH 133
• from 1:00 P. M. Monday, September 15, to 6:00 P. M. Tuesday, September 23,
- are given in Table 2.
-6-
