trucks are Peterbilt, 1972± vintage. The average load of coal per haul
is between 28 and 29 tons. One truck was weighed at random on October 2
and found to have a load of 28.19 tons.
The truck operation was observed at various locations on Stevens
Gulch Road and on SH 133. In addition, a couple of coal runs were made
with one of the drivers, noting the braking operation, etc. from inside
the cab.
Three braking systems are used: the pedal or air brake, the "jake"
I' brake and retorter brakes. For the most part, the "jake" brake and
retorter brakes are used in the descent on Stevens Gulch Road from the
truck loadout near the mine to SH 133. The "jake" brake works off the
• engine whereas the retorter brakes work off the transmission.
The pedal brake is actually used very little. On one run, the morning
of Wednesday, September 24, temperature measurements were made on the right,
~- rear truck drum brake with a Fluke DVM. The temperature of the drum brake
at the truck loadout near the mine was recorded to be 84.3° F. At the
bottom (intersection of Stevens Gulch Road and SH 133), the temperature of
(- the drum brake was recorded to be 87.Oo F.
~- The trucks go in for regular maintenance every 4000 miles, or about
once every five weeks. P1ajor servicing is performed on each truck once a
year.
• Savage Brothers was noted to have strict qualification standards for
its drivers. The qualifications are given in the Appendix.
-11-
