' Skyrocket Gilia (Ipomopsis aggregata), Alumroot (Heuchera parvifolia),
and Tufted Evening Primrose (Oenothera caespitosa). Also
apparent are Penstemon (Penstemon sp.), Flowery Phlox (Phlox
multiflora), Cinquefoil (Potentilla sp.), Dandelion (Taraxacum
officinale), and Violet (Viola sp.).
' Species observations reported herein and in Table J-1 are based
on April 14, 1981, observations.
Total vegetation cover is estimated to average 35 percent
(range 15-55 percent depending on slope aspect) with Vasey Big
Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp, vaseyana) accounting for
the majority of cover (5-30 percent). Rock cover averages
' 25 percent, litter cover 20 percent, and bare ground 20 percent.
Forage production is estimated to average 200 pounds per acre.

1

1
Bottomland
Vegetation of the bottomland area is dominated by grasses with
intermixings of shrubs. Major grasses include Timothy (Phleum
~ratense), Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis), Bluegrass (Poa sp.),
and Mountain Brome (Ceratochloa marginata Other grasses observed
are Slender Wheatgrass (Agropyron trachycaulum), Thickspike
Wheatgrass (Agropyron dasystachyum), and Western Wheatgrass
(Agropyron smithii). Sedge (Carex sp.) is a very prominant
grasslike species. Another grasslike species present is Woodrush
(Luzula sp.).
Shrubs evident on the site are Red-osier Dogwood (Swida
sericea), i4illow (Salix sp.), and Rubber Rabbitbrush
(Chrysothamnus nauseosus). A subshrub present is Woods Rose
(Rosa woodsii).
' Forbs are rare in the bottomland as they are outcompeted by
grasses for water. Forbs observed were Thistle (Cirsium sp.),
Skyrocket Gilia (Ipomopsis aggregata), and Violet (Viola sp.).
Total vegetation cover varies depending on whether the community
is dominated by grasses or by shrubs. In the former community,
total vegetation cover averages 65 percent (55 to 75 percent).
' Forage production was estimated to be 1700 pounds per acre. Litter
cover averages 30 percent and bare soil 5 percent. In shrub
dominated communities, total vegetation cover averages 45 percent
' (35 to 55 percent). Litter cover averages 30 percent and bare
soil 25 percent. Forage production for this site was estimated
to be 550 pounds per acre.
' THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES
' Two potentially threatened and endangered species have been
listed as occurring in central Grand County. Ousterhout Milkvetch
(Astragalus ousterhoutii) is listed as under review for possible
' J-2
