Section 816.41(d) Continued.

be used to divert the flow of water away from disturbed areas, rather
than using treatment facilities. These ditches are shown on Map 16a,
Kerr Mine Area Surface Mater Hydrology and discussed in detail under
Section 186.43. Ditch design is specified in Table 60, Temporary
Diversion Structure Specifications.
Other practices employed to meet the requirements of Part 816 will
include prompt revegetation according to the timetable set forth in
Section780.18, regulating water flow velocity with ditches set to
proper grade, contour furrows, riprap channels and mulching. No
toxic- or acid-forming materials are present in the Mine Plan Area
which would require selective placement and sealing of overburden.
Further discussion on the chemical characteristics of the overburden
is presented in Section 779.14 and in Table 73, Chemical Analysis of
Overburden. No special treatment of coal processing waste is
applicable since none will be produced, as discussed in Sections
816.81-816.93. Studies on the possible long-term effects of proposed
surface mining activities are presented in Section 780.21. These
studies indicate that long-term adverse effects will be minimal
without selective placement of spoil material in backfill areas. As
required by 30 CFR 816.42, all runoff from disturbed areas will be
passed through a system of sedimentation ponds. Sedimentation ponds
are described in detail in Sections 780.21, 780.?~5, 816.46, and in
Exhibit 42, Drainage and Sediment Control Plan.
In addition to reclamation techniques and treatment methods described
and referenced in this Section, further protection of the hydrologic
balance will be achieved by ongoing water monitoring, which will be
conducted to detect changes in surface and ground water quality and
quantity. The hydrologic monitoring plan is described in detail in
Section 180.21.
816-32R
Revised - January, 1991
