active chemical precipitation membrane separation water treatment facility, located along
the southern reclaimed portion of the West Pit as shown in Figure 1. The final backfilled
surfaces of the West Pit area have been topsoiled and vegetated, although the backfilled
areas subsequently re-disturbed as the result of the West Pit water treatment system will
require additional reclamation.
Waste Rock Facilities
Seven waste rock facilities (including the East and West Pits) were constructed during the
active mining operations as depicted on Figure 1. Waste rock facilities were constructed
in 50-foot benches by end-dumping waste rock from mine haul trucks. The benches or
lifts were constructed with angle of repose 1.SH:1 V slopes along the active benches . As
lift construction was completed on a lower lift, concurrent reclamation practices were
instituted reclaiming the lower lift as upper lift construction was initiated. As soon as
construction was completed on the lower lift, the lift was contoured (i.e., graded) to a
3H:1V slope configuration, topsoil was placed, and the reclaimed surface was vegetated.
As a result, all of the waste rock facilities had been either partially or fully reclaimed
prior to the finalization of the mining operations. Concurrent reclamation provided
immediate stormwater management benefits through minimizing exposure of waste rock
and providing vegetative stability.
Waste rock facility descriptions are listed below:
1. Waste Rock Facility A is located west of the West Pit and north of the Rito
Seco stream channel. This area was never used for waste rock disposal but
served as an area for topsoil stockpile storage during active mining operations.
Current and future use of the area will be as stormwater retention ponds for
post-reclamation mine operations north of the Rito Seco stream channel. Two
ponds have been constructed in the area to allow for the collection and
retention of stormwater from reclaimed waste rock facilities B, C, and the East
and West Pit backfills.
' 2. Waste Rock Facility B is located west of the West Pit and north of the Rito
Seco stream channel. Most of the waste rock placed at Waste Rock Facility B
was removed to facilitate final partial backfilling of the West Pit. The lower
' lift of the facility is all that currently remains. This lift was concurrently
contoured, topsoiled, and vegetated during facility construction in 1992. The
1
Battle Mountain Resources, /nc.
