consisting of the crusher, mill, tailing disposal area, truck shop, mine equipment ready
line, administration facilities, and laboratory are located south of the county road and in a
tributary to the Culebra drainage. Precious metal ore was extracted from the open pit
facilities and transported to the crusher facility where it was either stockpiled or fed
directly to the crusher. Ore delivered to the crusher was reduced in size using a jaw
crusher and was then transported to the mill via an overhead conveyor and pan feeder
belts. The crushed ore was beneficiated in the closed-circuit mill facilities. Gold was
recovered from the ore by a carbon-in-leach circuit. Products of this milling process
were dore and mill tailing. The tailing was deposited in the composite lined tailing
disposal area as shown in Figure 1. Water from the tailing was collected in the disposal
area and then recycled back to the mill for further use. Waste rock from the mining areas
was placed in one of seven waste rock areas (see Figure 1). Included with the mine and
beneficiation operations were various ancillary support facilities such as the
administration, maintenance, and laboratory facilities.
Since the completion of mining activities in October 1996 and beneficiation operations in
November 1996, the mine and beneficiation facilities have been undergoing final
reclamation, closure, and/or ownership transfer. Beneficiation facilities associated with
the crusher and mill operations have been decommissioned and await final dismantling,
demolition, and removal. The administration, laboratory, and mine maintenance facilities
ownership has been transferred to the Costilla County Natural Resource Conservation
Service (CCNRCS) to facilitate development of a local industrial park complex.
Reclamation and closure activities at the tailing disposal area are currently being
conducted. Such activities include: (1) the management of the supernatant pond and
underdrain collection system contained within the lined facility and (2) surface land
reclamation.
Each of the operations facilities is discussed in further detail in the following sections.
For more information on the DMG operating and reclamation plans for the Project, see
the DMG Permit M-88-112 and technical revisions.
Battle Mountain Resources, /nc.
