5.0 DESCRIPTION OF POTENTIAL POLLUTANT SOURCES
The potential pollutant sources include: (1) previous and current chemicals used in the
milling process and water treatment facility, (2) fuels, oils, and lubricants used previously
for mine equipment and currently used with reclamation equipment, and (3) sediment
generation from naturally existing exposed rock. With regazds to chemicals previously
used in the mill facilities, the use and storage of these chemicals has been discontinued.
Table 1 contains a description of facilities for the Project, the type of potential pollutant
for each facility, and the applicable BMPs. Table 2 contains a complete list of the fuels,
oils, lubricants, and chemicals currently used or stored on-site, the storage methods and
the location for storage of each item.
' The chemicals, oils, fuels, and lubricants on-site aze subject to the existing Emergency
Response Plan (ERP, DMG document TR-27) and Spill Prevention Control and
' Countermeasures Plan (SPCC) in place at the mine. The ERP and SPCC plan has been
recently revised and updated to reflect the current site conditions. The ERP outlines
' BMRI's measures to prevent spills and the appropriate actions to be taken in the event of
a spill for containment, monitoring, clean up, and reporting of the spill.
In general, good housekeeping procedures will provide a great measure of protection
against a spill. Fuels will be stored in aboveground tanks that aze located within lined
containment areas. These aeeas are designed to hold 110 percent of the capacity of the
largest tank. Oils, greases, hydraulic fluid, and antifreeze will be stored to minimize
potential contamination resulting from contact with precipitation. Likewise, chemicals
used currently for water treatment will be stored so as to preclude contact with
stormwater or will be in an area subject to zero discharge.
Waste Rock and Ore Leaching as a Potential Pollutant Source
During the initial permitting of the San Luis Project and during the various DMG
technical revision reviews, testing has been performed on ore and waste rock to
determine the potential of the material to generate acid or leach potential pollutants. The
test program consisted of the following:
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc. Telesto Solutions, /nc.
,o. rou,~o.m„n,e. mo„oseme,~vm~.e«~ 15 May 3. 1001
