supernatant pond from the underdrain system is either evaporated or used for imgation of
reclaimed portions of the tailing disposal area during the summer months.
The tailing disposal area is composite lined with atwelve-inch thick compacted soil layer
overlain by a 40-mil VLDPE synthetic liner. The tailing Facility is a zero discharge
facility and was designed to retain precipitation falling within the footprint of that facility
and the crusher/mill area, located to the north and east of the tailings disposal area. In
addition, upgradient diversions to the south and east of the tailing facility are designed to
collect and convey upgradient runoff away from the tailings disposal facility. Additional
design information is contained in the DMG permit. These facilities remain in place and
functional and will remain so until final reclamation of the tailing disposal area is
completed.
Final reclamation plans for the tailing disposal area calls for re-establishing the
upgradient and tailing disposal area drainage patterns. This requires placement of fill
material in low areas of the tailing disposal area and grading the final fill surface to a
common spillway that will be located at the northwestern section of the tailing disposal
area. Although significant portions (i.e., approximately 75 acres) of the tailing disposal
area have been filled, topsoiled and vegetated, the facility final reclamation will not be
completed until the continued management of the supematant pond and underdrain flow
volumes is completed. Before upgradient drainages can be routed through the facility,
final reclamation of the tailing disposal area must be completed and a spillway must be
constructed to allow conveyance and collection of stormwater from the facility surface
and the upgradient diversions. Currently the supematant pond covers approximately 17
acres of the facility and the underdrain flows average approximately 30 to 50 gallons per
minute. In addition, the facility is currently managed as a contingency facility for the
management of the West Pit water treatment facility reject concentrate stream.
Therefore, the upgradient drainage will continue to be diverted and precipitation falling
within the tailing disposal area will continue to be captured and managed within the
tailing disposal facility supernatant pond and underdrain collection system until the West
Pit water treatment operations are suspended.
Battle Mountain Resources, Inc.
