2.05 APPLICATION FOR PERMIT FOR SURFACE OR t1NDERGROUND MINING ACTIVITIES -
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATION AND RECLAMATION PLANS.
Water Supply
Water for mine uses, such as fire fighting, underground and
surface dust suppression, and sanitary and domestic needs of
mine personnel was partially obtained from the Steven's Gulch
well field. The well field construction was started in March,
1977, and completed in February, 1978. It is located in the
SNNW'4, Section 13, T.13.S., R.92.W., 6th P.M. (see Map 8A-8).
The facilities constructed here are wells, pumps, water piping,
well house storage tank, and a 500,000 gallon water storage
tank. The water is obtained from well SG-1. Other wells are
used for observation and monitoring (see Section 2. O5. 6 (3)
for details). As mentioned earlier, water is pumped from well
SG-1 and the 500,000 gallon water tank into the storage tank for
further pumping into the pipeline to the 300,000 and 100,000
gallon tanks at the mine site. The well house storage tank,
pumps, and well are enclosed by a building to minimize visual
impacts and weather problems. The 500,000 gallon water storage
tank was constructed in 1981, 100 feet south and slightly west
of the well house. Water is piped by the Pitkin Mesa Pipeline
Company from springs located approximately two miles north of
the long-term lease area and within the Terror Creek drainage.
At cessation of mining, the 500,000 gallon water tank and
associated access and maintenance easements will be transferred
to the Pitkin Mesa Pipeline Company.
The location of the water supply lines in presented on Map 9-7
Structures in the Volume 9 - Environmental Resources Appendices
and on Map 8A-6.
Sedimentation Ponds - Mine Site
Four sedimentation dams were constructed from September, 1978,
to June, 1979, between elevation 6,775 feet and elevation 6,600
feet of the mine Permit area. They are located directly south
of the mine site immediately downstream from the reclaimed and
West Ridge waste disposal sites in the S'~SE',SE,, Section 24 and
the NE <SE <, SE3sNE~, (North of Steven's Gulch road), Section 25,
T.13.5., R.92.W., 6th P.M. (see Map B-1).
These ponds were designed and constructed with the input of
Chuck Leaf P.E., a consulting civil engineer and hydrologist,
and after consultation and approval of the Office of Surface
Mining, the U.S. Geological Survey and the Division of Minerals
& Geology. See Map No. BA-1, Construction Specifications for
Sedimentation Ponds, and Pond Construction Certifications in the
Ponds, Impoundments, and Dams Appendix in Volume 8A.
The ponds conform to 9.05.2, .5, .6, .7, and .17.
