1
2.04.6(2)(a)
The intrusions flanking the lease block were brought to the
surface during early Tertiary time. Much of the fracturing
of the D7esaverde rocks probably took place at this time.
' However, indications are that the entire section may have
been uplifted in one unit, reflected by the fact that no
' major folding or faulting of the coal-bearing units on the
lease block has been noted.
' The regional dip of the Mesaverde .Group across the area
is 3 to 5 degrees north-northeast. Through the use of aerial
' photography and subsurface data it has been determined that
these strata have been gently folded into a plunging syncline,
' the axis of which trends to the northeast near the east of the
mine area. The magnitude of the plunge on this syncline is
' 3 to 4 degrees. Dips of the strata generally increase from
nearly 5 degrees in the nortkiwest (farthest from the synclinial
' axis) to approximately 2.3 degrees near the center of the axis.
South of the lease, where it is expected the dips are significantly
higher because of influence from the intrusives Sips
' are encountered on the order of 5 degrees. This seems to indicate
that the area may have been uplifted in one unit leaving the beds
' relatively uncontorted.
' The structure mapped on top of the six major seams (A-F) is
very similar, showing only minor a nomalies. This suggests the
absence of any major "rolls" in the area. In
i
ll"
ith
i
t
i
"
di
t the Bear Mine a
l
th-
t-
nor
ro
w
ren
ng
m
an ax
s approx
ma e
y wes
nor
west has been encountered. During field work conducted in the
' Atlantic Richfield Sylvester Gulch '!~st P.dit in 1976, anomalous
dips in the F seam were observed, suggesting the presence of a

' 38
