Box 721
Lamar, Colorado 81052
Dear Craig:
I have evaluated the site where you propose to expand your
Earl-Eoffmaa-Reyher Pit #3, in the SW 1/4, Section 32, T22S,
RS~8W, 6th P.K.
T2-e predominant range site oa the expansion area is Gravel
Breaks and I am enclosing a cope of the range site
dE~scriptioa from the SCS Technical Guide for your use. The
p:~eeeat vegetation ie dominantly Blue Grams, Sand Dropseed,
3-awns, Ring Muhlp, Sroom Snakeweed and various annual
forbs.
As: we discussed, topsoil development is very limited oa this
ei.te due to the dominant soil being of the Cascajo Series.
Yaur intention to stockpile the fine material which is a by-
ps•oduct of pour operation will facilitate reclamation since
th.ia material will be spread over the area before
replacement of the available topsoil. Since the fine
material which is presently stockpiled from your current
operation consists largely of sand and fine sand, I have
adjusted the suggested sending mix to include some species
adapted to this texture of material. I estimate from your
map that the area to be mined and revegetated ie roughly 25
acres.
Enclosed, for your use in developing the reclamation plan,
are copies of our standards and specifications for Critical
Area Plaa+ing an3 Mnlchina. i have highlighted sections
which are particularly pertinent to this situation.
I have surveyed the area and found no cultural or historical
resources which would warrant further investigation.
However, as we discussed at the site, there is a sandstone
outcrop adjacent to this site which should be protected for
aesthetic reasons since it overlooks the Arkansas River.
Taking care to limit mining activities to the permitted area
will avoid impacting this geologic formation.
If i can be of further assistance please let me know.
Si~s~ sly,
'/Robert A el",
Die~trict Conservationist
enc:loaures
