EXHBIIT I - 1(a)
""'ITED STATES
DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE
SOIL
CONSERVATION
SERVICE

'`~ BENT AVENUE
LAS ANIMAS, CO 81054
(719) 456-0120
July 3, 199
Craig Goble
Cairder, Inc.
P.O. Box 721
Lamar, Colorado 81052
D:~ar Craig:
I have evaluated the site where you propose to expand your
Es:rl-Hoffman-Reyher Pit ~3, in the SW 1/4, Section 32, T228,
R48W, 6th P.K.
TYie predominant range site on the expansion area is Gravel
Bs~eaks and I am enclosing a copy of the range site
description from the SCS Technical Guide for your use. The
present vegetation is dominantly Blue Grams, Saad Dropseed,
3-awns, Ring Mubly, Broom Snakeweed and various annual
forbs.
As we discussed, topsoil development is very limited on this
site due to the dominant soil being of the Caecajo Series.
Your intention to stockpile the fine material which is a by-
product of your operation will facilitate reclamation since
Ibis material will be spread over the area before
replacement of the available topsoil. Since the fine
material which is presently stockpiled from pour current
operation consists largely of sand and fine sand, I have
adjusted the suggested seeding mix to include some species
adapted to this texture of material. I estimate from your
map that the area to be mined and revegetated is roughly 25
scree.
Enclosed, for your use is developing the reclamation plan,
are copies of our standards and specifications for Critical
Ax~~oa Pla~~i~g and M4'_ahia4. I ba~9 hi4hlighted sections
which are particularly pertinent to this situation.
I ;have surveyed the area and found no cultural or historical
resources which would warrant further investigation.
Hrnaever, as we discussed at the site, there ie a sandstone
outcrop adjacent to this site which should be protected for
aesthetic reasons since it overlooks the Arkansas River.
Talcing care to limit mining activities to the permitted area
wi:Ll avoid impacting this geologic formation.
if I can be of further assistance please let me know.
GSi~~ sly,
Rff/Robert A el",
Diaitrict Conservationist
enclosures
