Slopes: After mining has ceased, if any disturbance to
slope in areas other than the lake areas has occurred, the
natural slope of the land must be replaced. The natural
slope of the land at this site is primarily level.
If severe compaction has occurred in these surrounding
areas, then primary tillage will be required to break up
compaction, and should be followed by reseeding, please see
items three and six below.
2) Top Soil: A minimum of ten inches of top soil should
be stock piled. If the top soil is to be stock piled for a
year or more it should be seeded to Fairway wheatgrass at a
rate of six pounds per acre Pure Live Seed. Stock piles
should be kept at a minimum distance of 500 feet from the
South Platte River to avoid siltation.
3) Cover Crop: The preferable dates for planting a cover
crop are June 1 to June 30.
4) Mulching: A native prairie hay free from weed species
should be used as a mulch. This will prevent the growth of
an undesirable species.
5) Fertilizer: A soil test should be conducted prior to
any application of fertilizer.
6) Grass seeding: The grass should be planted with a
grass drill that is equipped with an agitator box, double
discs, and depth bands. The tube placement should be
directly between the double discs, and the planting depth
between one half and two thirds of an inch.
