• and shallow bedrock), The following section summarizes topsoil salvage depths, volumes,
and characteristics by map unit for the East Wadge Extension Area.
2VD-Routt-Routt Variant Silty Clay Loam Complex. This map unit is located in the well to
somewhat poorly drained, strongly sloping to moderately steep drainage channels and
concave swales associated with the two upper Bond Drainage tributaries. Routt is well
drained whereas Routt variant is somewhat poorly drained. These soils have deep, well
developed profiles with thick, dark colored surface horizons and subsoil clay
accumulation. These soils have thicker surface horizons than the adjacent Buckskin soil.
Topsoil salvage is restricted in the subsoil and substratum due to very high clay
contents, a very strongly acid reaction, and/or moderately deep ground water levels. The
mean in situ topsoil salvage depth for Routt and Routt variant, based upon 11 profiles, is
just under 2.0 feet.
The 2VD map unit consists of 60 percent Routt, 20 percent Routt variant, and 5 percent
each of Aaberg, Binco, Buckskin, and Gapo variant inclusions. A 1.5-foot mean salvage
. depth was used for this map unit to calculate topsoil volumes listed in Table 9-7-1 and
Exhibit 9-1.
2VE-Routt Silty Clay Loam. The Routt silty clay loam map unit occurs on the steep, lower
col luvial, mountain sideslopes adjacent to Bond Drainage. The soil profile is deep and
well developed with a thick, dark colored surface horizon and subsoil clay accumulation.
This soil has a thicker surface horizon than Buckskin and higher subsoil clay content than
Skylick.
The recommended topsoil salvage depth is based exclusively on the thickness of the surface
mollic epipedon since subsurface clay levels are unsuitable. The mean in situ suitable
topsoil depth for 11 profiles is 2.0 feet.
The 2VE map unit consists of 80 percent Routt with 10 percent Skylick and 5 percent each
of Buckskin and Wineveda inclusions. A 1.5-foot mean salvage depth was used for this map
unit to calculate topsoil volumes listed in Table 9-7 -1 and Exhibit 9-1. This topsoil
salvage depth figure accounts for topsoil loss during salvage due to brush clearing and
. steep slopes.
9-7-5 Revised 05/16/88
