3-8
3.3 Topsoil Placement
Prior to placement of topsoil on regraded areas, the regraded material will be
conditioned with dozer-mounted scarifiers in order to minimize the interface between
topsoil and subsoil and to promote establishment of vegetation and maximize slope
stability. Topsoil will be placed in lifts of approximately 4" to 8" in thickness by rubber-
tired scrapers. The entire affected surface will subsequently be graded and leveled to
achieve the final desired contour of the topsoil layer as shown on Figure 3.3-1.
The placement of topsoil will be in a manner that will allow for the even
distribution of materials throughout the disturbed area from which topsoil was previously
removed and which exhibited salvageable material prior to disturbance. The portion of
disturbed land located on the canyon floor is primarily associated with road construction
and a sedimentation pond.
Topsoil will be placed only when in a moderately dry condition in order to
minimize clodding and compaction, which can result from multiple passes with scrapers
or other equipment. Placement of topsoil will be inspected as necessary to assure
• proper depth and soil densities (80 to 95 pounds per cubic foot dry density) are
achieved.
Disturbances created after the initial mine site construction will have topsoil
replaced in depths approximating the depth that existed prior to disturbance. Topsoil
will be replaced on the office area to its original depth of two feet, since this area is in
an AVF.
M`Clane Volume 1 06/04
