The faces of the road and slope reten-
tion fills shall be protected from raveling and erosion. This
face protection should also protect the (;eogrid from U1traViolet
Radiation and mechanical degradation. It is anticipated the
majority of the fill faces will be protected with cobble and
small boulder sized rock fragments. A Concrete Gunite could also
be used as a facing material.
ROAD FILL MATERIALS
Structural subgrade material, which may
also be used for mechanically reinforced slope retention back-
fill, is to be granular, very low plasticity lPL<81, compactable
and within the following gradation:
• Maximum size, by screening fi"
Passing #4 screen 20-50%
Passing #40 screen 10-30%
Passing #200 screen 5-20%
Any imported structural road subbase
(Hveem-Carmany R>70, swell not critical) is to granular, medium
to coarse grained, very low plastic (PI<4), non freedraininq,
compactable and within the following gradation:
Maximum size, by screening 6"
Passing the #4 screen 20-85%
Passing the #40 screen 10-60%
Passing the #200 screen 3-15%
Imported structural road subbase and aggregate base course (ABCI
to be compacted to 90% of its maximum modified proctor dry densi-
ty IASTM-D-1557) at a moisture content within ± 2Y, of optimum
moisture.
12
