sideslopes, escarpments, and ridges. Ustorthents have a very shallow 10 to 10 inches) Profile with a
thin light colored surface horizon which directly overlies skeletal substratums of weathered shale and
sandstone. The surface horizon contains 30 to 50 percent rock fragments including gravel, cobbles,
and stones. Cryoborolls have a very shallow profile with a thin dark colored surface horizon which
directly overlies weathered and fractured sandstone. The surface horizon contains 15 to 65 percent
rock fragments including gravel, cobbles, and stones. Adjacent soils are shallow and have loamy dark
colored mollic epipedons (Splitrol while other adjacent areas are void of soil (Rock Outcropl.
The 103 map unit consists of 45 percent Ustorthents and 40 percent Cryoborolls with 70 percent
Rock Outcrop and 5 percent Splitro inclusions (Addendum 3, Tab 9, Soil Baseline Studyl. No
recoverable soil is available from this map unit due to very steep slopes, very thin soils, high rock
fragment content, and intermingled rock outcrops (Addendum 8, Tab 9, Soil Baseline Studyl.
RD-Improved Road. This map unit occurs where an improved transportation corridor has been placed.
No suitable soil is available from this map unit because the surface has been graded, gravelled, or
paved. Light-use roads, with intact soil, are not included in this map unit (Table 21-1, Soil Salvage
Volume (Life-of-Minel, and Exhibit 9-1, Soil Types and Soil Salvage Mapl.
DL-Disturbed Land (previously mined areas, farmstead areal. This map unit is located in areas where
prior construction has destroyed, covered, or contaminated the soil resource. These areas include
previously mined land on the eastern part of the study area and a farmstead in the southwest corner of
the study area. No suitable soil is available from this unit (Table 21-1 Soil Salvage Volume (Life-of-
Mine), and Exhibit 9-1, Soil Types and Soil Salvage Mapl.
W-Water. This map unit consists of man-made and beaver pond areas that existed when the baseline
soil surveys were completed. No suitable soil is available from this unit (Table 21-1 Soil Salvage
Volume (Life-of-Minel, and Exhibit 9-1, Soil Types and Soil Salvage Mapl.
Soil Salvage Techniques. Before any area at the mine site other than a proposed soil stockpile site is
significantly disturbed, the suitable soil material will be removed to the depth specified in Table 21-1,
Soil Salvage Volume (Life-of-Mine), and Exhibit 9-1, Soil Types and Soil Salvage Map. Suitable soil
will be salvaged from all significant disturbance areas including sediment ponds lincludes pond area,
embankment,
~I
17 Revised 2/99
