Construction
activities were started in 1976. Operation of the Golden Eagle began in 1977. Access to
the Maxwell coal seam was through an incline slope. Ventilation was provided by two
intake and two return airshafts.
Development mining was completed by continuous mining machines, advancing sets of
mains, sub-mains, and longwall gate entries. The objective was to prepare the mineable
coal reserve for more efficient, economical mining by other more productive and safer
• methods of mining. Use of longwall mining increased the recovery of the coal reserve.
maximizing efficiency, and the overall safety of the operation.
The major equipment associated with the Golden Eagle Mine consisted of continuous
miners and shuttle cars; longwall shearing machines, shields and face conveyors; and,
conveyor belt system. Other support equipment was required for ventilation, man and
material transport, and maintenance. Table 15 -Mining Equipment, lists the major
equipment used during the life of the mine.
Coal production continued intermittantly for nineteen years from 1976-1995. Annual
production varied, ranging up to two million tons, dependent on market demands.
Surface facilities associated with the underground mining operations were facilities
necessary for the processing and loading of coal into rail cars and trucks for transport to
remote processing facilities. Other ancillary facilities consisted of shops, warehouses,
and office bathhouse. Essential operation facilities included ventilation shafts and fans;
escapeway, production and supply slopes to access the Maxwell coal seam; and,
boreholes and ancillary equipment for methane degasification of the coal seam and
longwall gob. Surface runoff was controlled by ditches and drop structures to sediment
control ponds for holding of runoff for sediment and/or treatment prior to discharge.
. 2.05-1 (Permit Renewal R,evisiea - 3/il/00)
~N'63
