July 1993 -32- 923-2515 •
Ground water quality data (Table 5.23) in Scotchmans Gulch is from asame-day, down-gradient
sample (WRD-1) located below the confluence with Armand Draw. The conductivity (4.07
mmhos/cm) is approaching the limit for germination of wheat and barley (Gonzales 1993). The
sodium adsorption ratio (SA.R) (4.3) is acceptable. Boron is (0.34 mg/1) is within acceptable
limits and chloride (43 mg/:I) is well below the suspect level of 250 mg/I. With a pH higher
than 7.0 there is no adverse: impact f'or aluminum, manganese, nickel, and zinc, as discussed
earlier. The values for arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, molybdenum, and selenium aze below
suspect levels.
5.4.2 Water Rights. lrrigation Ditches, and Diversion Points
There aze no existing water rights on Scotchmans Gulch and no existing irrigation ditches (Table
5.17). A small ditch begins at the base of a small hill in the edge of a grain field between
Scotchmans Gulch and Armand Draw and extends north for about 1.5 mile to intercept
Scotchmans Gulch. This ditch is not related to flood irrigation activities. The ditch was
installed by Hockett (1993), the landowner in 1972 to divert stormwater runoff from the field
and prevent alkali salt from being deposited in the field.
5.4.3 Existing Flood lrrigation Areas
There aze no existing flood irrigation areas along Scotchmans Gulch.
5.4.4 Subirrigated Areas
Approximately 12 acres of a large grain field on the Hockett property is potentially subirrigated
(Figure 2). The Spicerton fine sandy loam soils in this field have a hydric soil component, a
high available water capacity, and a very low permeability. The surt'ace layer of this soil is a
light brownish gray (lOYR 6/2 dry) fine sandy loam two inches thick. The subsoil is a grayish
brown (lOYR 5/2 dry) clay loam six inches thick over a highly saline-alkaline light brownish
Golder Associates
