July 1993 -1- 923-2515
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Puroosg
Peabody Western Coal Company (Peabody) intends to submit a permit application to the
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG) for the proposed Yoast Mine Project in
Routt County, Colorado. An alluvial valley floor (AVF) study is needed to support the permit
application.
The purpose of this investigation is to characterize the geologic and vegetative characteristics
of several drainage systems in the vicinity of the proposed Yoast Mine property. The headwaters
of the drainage systems investigated for this study aze situated near the Yoast property.
Therefore, the potential exists for mine water dischazge into these drainages. Specifically, the
• drainages which were investigated aze; Scotchman's Gulch, Annand Draw, Grassy Creek and
the unnamed drainage lying east of Annand Draw. The information presented in this study will
aid Peabody in assessing the enduonmental impact of any potential discharge of mine water into
these drainage systems.
1.2 Background
This study is a continuation of a previous study conducted jointly by Golder Associates Inc.
(Golder), ACZ Inc., and Keammerer Ecological Consultants in 1990. The 1990 study concerned
the upper portion of Grassy Creek and two drainage systems (Sage Creek and Dry Creek) which
were not included in this investigation. The 1990 AVF investigation is presented on pages 13
through 20 of Volume II, Tab 16 to the Seneca II-W permit. Geological and land use maps are
presented as Exhibits 16-2 and 16-3 to the above referenced Tab 16.
•
Golder Associates
