This stratigraphic unit consisting of shales, siltstones,
sandstones and coal beds spans an interval of approximately 230 feet.
Eight identifiable coal beds are found in this unit, one or more of which
were penetrated in each hole except CR 224, where no coal was found.
The twelve exploratory holes were completed between August 28 and No-
vember 14, 1972. The holes were cored continuously from surface to
total depth, and ranged in depth from 65 to 303 feet. Longyear 33 and 44
equipment was utilized in coring. Boyles Brothers of Golden, Colorado
provided equipment and personnel for the coring. Knox• Bergman• Shearer
Corporation provided geological and supervisory personnel.
Surface samples were taken with 24-inch sections of open-end serrated
drillpipe which was slowly rotated and forced into the unconsolidated
sediments overlying bedrock. Avery compact sample resulted, reduced
in volume up to one-half the original. Depths of surface samples ranged
from 3 feet 6 inches to 2l feet.
At approximately bedrock, or where surface sampling became difficult,
51
