n <br />U <br /> <br />3.0 iIESULTS <br />3.1 Site Records Search <br />A search cf the computerized site records maintained by the <br />Colorado CARP determined that only three archaeological sites had been <br />recorded near the project areas. Ttvo of .those sites are prehistoric, <br />and the third is historic. Details about each of these previously <br />recorded sites are summarized in Table 3-7. <br />Table 3-1. An d0 acre parcel of BL1.1 property is <br />found in the Nl of the I•rl; of Section 37, immediately north of Tract 1. <br />This F•e noel was surveyed on 41ay S, 1977 by the 8L14 district archaeologist <br />in response to a coal lease application Gy Peabody Coal Company. The <br />archaeologist recorded no sites in this at•ea, but noted the presartce of a <br />few isolated flakes in the P14J~ of the P141i of Section 31. <br />3.2 Historic Land Patents <br />Land patent records for a four mile square area surrounding and <br />incorporating the survey tracts {j,e., Sections 31, 36, 1, and E) were <br />reviewed at the 4bntrose County Assessor's office. This search <br />determirr-d that the earliest land patent was made in 1905, and the latest <br />in 1974. P•lost of the claims were made between 190£, end 1914, the <br />yreatesl nwaher oca:rring in 1916 and 1911. The sizes of the claims are <br />small, nearly all being q0 or 80 acre parcels. Tt:e dates on thew claims <br />indicate that land in the area teas not' claimed (cr, at least recorded as <br />such) until alter Wucla was settled in 1904.
