PHYSICAL SETTING
The SRWGP is located southeast of Gunnison, Colorado, along Tomichi Creek, which is
a tributary of the Gunnison River. The site's elevation is about 7,400 feet above M.S.L. Based
on the climatological station in Gunnison (Station 53662), the average annual temperature is 37.5
degrees Fahrenheit, and the average rainfall is 10.5 inches per yeaz. The site is laced with
oxbows and former courses of the creek.
VARRA COMPANIES CORPORATION OPERATION
The SRWGP is in Gunnison County, Colorado, and the new operator is VCI. The pit is
located in a portion of the Southwest Quarter of Section 3 and the Southeast Quarter of the
Southeast Quarter of Section 4, Township 49 North, Range 1 East of the NM P.M. Also located
at this site in the Northeast Quarter of Section 10, Township 49 North, Range 1 East of the NM
P.M. is the Seahorse Pond, which is currently being mined.
The pit is in the alluvium of Tomichi Creek. Because the pit is less than 100 feet from
this tributary, the effect on the river occurs immediately. Therefore, there is no lagged depletion
to the river caused by the mining or evaporation.
The water uses in this plan will be commercial, industrial, and evaporation. Water from
the Griffmg No. 1 Ditch will replace this water to the stream. This water derives from historical
use credits due to irrigation of lands which are in the same location.
Evaporation
Compensation is due to the stream for evaporation from ground water exposed after
December 31, 1980. This exposed area is projected to total 39.62 acres. According to the decree
in Case No. 96CW267 and the state's consultation in that case, the annual net evaporation in the
area is 2.36 feet.
3
