Official Series Description-&ZANOLA Series • Page 2 of 3
' major part of the solum and C horizon above depth of 40 inches and are mainly 1/4 to 3 inches in
diameter.
The A horizon has hue of 5Y through 7.5YR, value of 4 through 7, 3 through 6 moist, and chroma of
1 through 4. It ranges from mildly alkaline through strongly alkaline.
The Bt horizon has hue of 5Y through 7.5YR, value of 5 through 7,4 through 6 moist, and chroma
of 1 through 6. This horizon is heavy clay loam, heavy silty clay loam or light clay. It ranges from
mildly alkaline through strongly alkaline and ranges from nonsaline to slightly saline.
' The Bk horizon has hue of 5Y through 7.5YR, value of 6 or 7,4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 2 through
4. This horizon is light clay loam, silty clay loam, light clay, or loam. It ranges from moderately
alkaline through very strongly alkaline and has about 4 to 14 percent calcium carbonate equivalent.
It ranges from nonsaline to slightly saline.
' COMPETING SERIES: These are the Aqua Fria, ArD, Baca Falfa, Hesaer, Mu ouse Mu ut,
Norrest, Pankv, Rencalson Renohill, Thurlow, Ulm,and yamo series. Aqua Fria soils have gravel
and cobble at depths of 18 to 36 inches and have noncalcareous A and Bt horizons. Arp, Mughouse,
' Mughut,Norrest, Rencalson and Renohill soils have bedrock above depth of 40 inches. Baca soils
have less than 15 percent fine or coarser sand in the argillic horizon and are noncalcareous in at least
one-fourth of their Bt horizons. Hesper soils have A horizons with coatings of values 5 dry and 3
moist when uncrushed, have less than 15 percent fine or coarser sand in the Bt horizon, and has
noncalcareous A and Bt horizons. Panky soils usually have hue of 5YR and have calcic horizons.
Thurlow soils are noncalcareous to depths of 10 to 20 inches and have stratified C horizons. Ulm
soils are noncalcareous to depths of 12 to 30 inches, have neutral or mildly alkaline Bt horizons and
have strong prismatic structure in the Bt horizon. Wyarno soils have solums less than 10 inches thick
to the base of the Bt horizon and have C horizons with more than 35 percent clay to depths of 40
inches or more. Falfa soils have hues of 5YR and redder in the Bt horizon.
' GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Manzanola soils are on alluvial fans, valley side slopes, or stream
terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 25 percent. They formed in alluvial materials derived principally
from sedimentary rock. At the type location the average annual precipitation is approximately 13
' inches, with peak periods of precipitation in the spring and early summer.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Baca soils and the Limon
soils. Limon soils have no argillic horizon.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium to slow runoff; moderately slow to
slow permeability.
' USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used as native pastureland and for dryland and irrigated
crops. Native vegetation is principally blue grama. Dryland crops are principally wheat; alfalfa,
' small grains, wheat, and row crops are grown under irrigation.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Eastern Colorado. The series is of small extent.
MLRA OFFICE RESPONSIBLE: Salina,Kansas
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pueblo Area, Colorado, 1974.
National Cooperative Soil Survey
