-2-
concepts:
1.) P11 areas to be reclaimed should be shaped and graded so that no slopes
will be steeper than 3:1. Where passible, flatter slopes are much more
desirable. lJhen shaping and grading, leave the area with a landform
that will be stable and which Trill drain naturally into existing drainage
channels trithout starting any new soil erosion. It might he necessary
to construct a diversion ditch or similar structure here and there in order
to keep water from concentrating, to hold runoff water, or to divert it
into existing natural drainage channels.
2,) Due to the severe limitations inherent in a clay surface for establishing
vegetation, a minimum of 4 inches of topsoil should be applied over all
areas to be revegetated. Topsoil could be salvaged from the overburden
but in this case it appe,~rs as though mostly all top soil will need to
be imported. Apply topsoil after shaping and grading is completed then
till the site to a depth of approximately 6 inches. This will permit
the topsoil to bind with the existing soil or clay surface and will
therefore help prevent air pockets and topsoil slippage.
3,) Apply fertilizer at a rate of approximately 50 lbs, of available nitrogen
and 50 lbs. of available phosphate (P2Q5) per acre. Time of fertilizer
application should be immediately prior to seeding unless equipment is
designed to apply fertilizer during the same operation seed is applied.
4,} Seeding shall be done using a grass drill properly equipped to handle
the seed being planted. The following seeding mixture is recommended:
S PEC I~:S
47estern wheatgrass
Side-eats grama
Pubescent wheatgrass
Indian Rice grass
VARIETY
Barton or Arriba
Vaughn
Luna
LBS. PURE LIVE SE ;D/ACRE
6,l,
1.8
3.6
2.5
5.) Treated area should be mulched using native hay mulch applied at 3000
lbs, per acre of air_dry material. At least 50~ of the mulch by weight
should be 10 inches or more in length. Anchor the mulch using a straw
crimper or a farm disc with the discs set straight. Cri-p the material
3 inches into the soil. All operations should be across the slope,
Other approved mulching material such as excelsior matting can be used
in place of native hap mulch,
6,) All seeded and treated areas need to be protected From livestock until
grass seeding is firmly established and site is stabilized.
