Official Series Description -POTTER Series <br />Page 3 of 4 <br />Coarse fragments: 20 to 60 percent of moderately to strongly cemented caliche fragments <br />Visible calcium carbonate: 50 to 70 percent as masses and nodules <br />Calcium carbonate equivalent: 40 to 60 percent and is moderately cemented in some pedons <br />Effervescence: strong or violent <br />Reaction: slightly to moderately alkaline <br />BCk horizons: <br />Hue: 7.5 YR or lOYR <br />Value: 7 or 8 dry, 6 or 7 moist <br />Chroma: 1 to 3 <br />Texture: gravelly, very gravelly or extremely gravelly fine sandy loam, loam, or clay loam. <br />Coazse fragments: The horizon ranges from 30 to 80 percent by volume of moderately to strongly <br />cemented caliche containing intermingled pockets of pinkish, loamy, calcareous soil material or soft <br />caliche beds. Pendants of calcium carbonate are on the lower surface of caliche plates in the BCk <br />horizon in some pedons. <br />Calcium carbonate equivalent: 50 to 80 percent <br />COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in the same family. Similar soils include <br />the Friona, Kimbrou~h, Polar, Sharvana, Slaughter, Tascosa, and Yellowhouse series. <br />Friona, Kimbrough, Sharvana, and Slaughter series: have petrocalcic horizons. <br />Polaz and Tascosa series: contain more than 35 percent siliceous gravel. <br />Yellowhouse series: has mixed mineralogy. <br />GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: <br />Pazent material: loamy, calcareous sediments derived from the upper part of the Ogallala Formation <br />of Miocene-Pliocene age. <br />Landform: very gently to steep sloping convex hills, ridges, and upper side slopes, around the <br />margin of larger playa lakes, ancient drainageways, and along the Caprock Escarpment. <br />Slopes: 1 to 30 percent. <br />Mean annual air temperature: 55 to 61 degrees F. <br />Mean annual soil temperature: 57 to 63 degrees F. <br />Mean annual precipitation: 16 to 21 inches. <br />Frost-free period: 190 to 220 days. <br />Elevation: 2,300 to 3,100 feet <br />Thornthwaite annual P-E Index Values: 30 to 34. <br />GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the similar Kim...hroulhPolar, <br />Tascosa, and Yellowhouse series and the Berda, Bippus, Mobeetie, and Veal series. <br />Berda soils are on slightly lower landscape positions and have mixed mineralogy. <br />Bippus soils are on lower landscape positions and have a mollic epipedon. <br />Kimbrough soils are on higher landscape positions and have a petrocalcic horizon. <br />Mobeetie soils are on slightly lower landscape positions and have 18 percent or less silicate clay in <br />the particle-size control section. <br />Polar and Tascosa soils are on similar landscape positions and have mixed mineralogy and over 35 <br />percent siliceous gravel in the particle-size control section. <br />Veal soils are on similar landscape positions and do not have C horizons. <br />Yellowhouse soils are on similar landscape positions and have mixed mineralogy. <br />http://www.statlab.iastate.edu/cgi-bin/osd/osdname.cgi?-P 3/15/2002 <br />
