(10 to 30 inches thick) <br />Page 2 of 4 <br />BCk2--29 to 55 inches; white (lOYR 8/1) extremel}' gravelly fine sandy loam, light gray (IOYR <br />7/2) moist; 74 percent by volume thick, moderately cemented, platy caliche fragments and ranging <br />from 1 to 6 inches on the long axis; 26 percent of the volume is soft powdery caliche and loamy <br />materials; few fine and medium roots mainly of woody plants between fractured plates; common <br />oxide stains on undersides of pendants and plates; violently effervescent; strongly alkaline; diffuse <br />wavy boundary. (20 to 30 inches thick) <br />BCk3--55 to 80 inches; white (lOYR 8/1) extremely gravelly fine sandy loam, light gray (lOYR <br />7/2) moist; 75 percent by volume of thick, moderately cemented, platy caliche fragments and <br />ranging from 1 to 6 inches on the long axis; 25 percent of the volume is soft powdery caliche and <br />loamy materials; common oxide stains on undersides of pendants and plates; violently effervescent; <br />strongly alkaline. <br />TYPE LOCATION: Lubbock County, Texas; From the intersection of Loop 289 and State <br />Highway 331 in southeast Lubbock; 0.2 mile east on paved road; 0.5 mile southeast on private road; <br />150 feet north into rangeland; along the edge of Yellowhouse Canyon; Latitude: 33 degrees, 32 <br />minutes, 1.1 seconds N; Longitude: 101 degrees, 46 minutes, 48.6 seconds W; Lubbock East, Texas <br />USGS quad; NAD 27. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Soil moisture: An ustic moisture regime bordering on acidic. The soil moisture control section is dry <br />in some or all parts for more than 180 but less than 205 days, cumulative, in normal yeazs. October <br />through March are the driest months and these soils are intermittently moist in April through <br />September. <br />Mean annual soil temperature: 59 to 67 degrees F. <br />Depth to calcic horizon: 2 to 10 inches. <br />Solum thickness: 10 to 20 inches. <br />Particle-size control section: 18 to 35 percent silicate clay, averages more than 35 percent coarse <br />fragments. <br />A horizon: <br />Hue: 7.SYR or lOYR <br />Value: 4 to 6 dry, 3 to 5 moist <br />Chroma: 2 to 4 <br />Texture: fine sandy loam, loam, or clay loam or their gravelly or very gravelly counterparts <br />Coarse fragments: 0 to 60 percent of moderately to strongly cemented caliche fragments <br />Effervescence: strong or violent <br />Reaction: slightly to moderately alkaline <br />Note: Where the A horizon has a moist color value of less than 3.5, the organic carbon is less than <br />0.58 percent, or the thickness is less than 7 inches. <br />Bk horizon: <br />Hue: 7.SYR or lOYR <br />Value: 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist <br />Chroma: 2 to 4 <br />Texture: gravelly or very gravelly fine sandy loam, foam, or clay loam. <br />http://wwwstatlab.iastate.edu/cgi-bin/osd/osdname.cgi?-P 3115/2002 <br />
