_ Oct-10-00 06.32A AVS o~Buena Vista, Inc. 719 395-3185
than a half inch deep or they will not be able to make it to the surface once they germinate in the
spring.
I would not recommend fertilization of this dryland site for several reasons. First, you
generally have a flush of weeds that follows disturbance of a site. By fertilizing, you stimulate the
weeds at the expense ofthe new grasses that you are trying to get started. Second, the lack of rainfall
in your area limits any potential response to the fertilizer. Although nitrogen is generally limiting on
such sites, the most limiting factor is water. Also, applying nitrogen fertilizer to soils that are hot and
dry leads to volatilization of some of the nitrogen into the air. What the soil really needs is organic
matter which can be applied in the form of manure or mulch such as straw or old hay. This improves
the water holding capacity of the soil as well as provides some nutrients in a slow release form.
[ hope this helps and answers your questions. Please feel free to call if I can provide any
further input.
Sincerely„
Superintendent
P.03
JB:aw
