First, you <br />generally have a flush of weeds that follows disturbance of a site. By fertilizing, you stimulate the <br />weeds at the expense ofthe new grasses that you are trying to get started. Second, the lack of rainfall <br />in your area limits any potential response to the fertilizer. Although nitrogen is generally limiting on <br />such sites, the most limiting factor is water. Also, applying nitrogen fertilizer to soils that are hot and <br />dry leads to volatilization of some of the nitrogen into the air. What the soil really needs is organic <br />matter which can be applied in the form of manure or mulch such as straw or old hay. This improves <br />the water holding capacity of the soil as well as provides some nutrients in a slow release form. <br />[ hope this helps and answers your questions.
