I am familiar with the azea and will offer my insights on
what grasses to plant, reseeding procedures, and answer your question concerning the need for
fertilization.
Following is a seed mix that I have found to work weU on dryland sites such as yours:
Species Variety Ibs/ac
Crested Wheatgrass Hycrest 6
Western Wheatgrass Rosaruta 4
Smooth Brome Manchaz 3
Mountain Brome Bromar
Total
15
You could also add 1 to 2 lbs/ac of Small Burnett (Var. Delar) to the mix if you want a small forb
that does well on these types of sites.
The best time to seed dryland sites in the mountains is ]ate October or early November before
the ground freezes and the snow flies. Just broadcast the seed and then lightly work it into the soil
with some type ofharrow behind the tractor or pickup. Use caution so as not to bury the seeds more
