Underlying the humus is about 3' of tan to light brown
weathered clay with rare spots of calcareous material. Mixed with the clay are
minor amounts of shale and sandstone fragments. The latter mainly are
weathered and generally non-calcareous, although some are fresh and calcareous. ..
20
Below the weathered clay is a calcareous, fine-grained, dark brown shale
that weathers tan, and has a hackly fracture. This section which is about 3'
to 4' thick appears almost like bedrock, but no bedding or other i ndication of
bedrock was observed.
The lower 6' to 8' of cut by the trench are in shale and claystone which
is less weathered than above. The shale and claystone are dark brown,
weathering to tan, calcareous, iron-stained and streaked with sandstone
fragments up to 6" in maximum dimension.
Roots were exposed for full depth of the trench.

45
I
D
C
m
v
O
D
Z
m
-C
Ll
m
0
r
0
c~
m
-~
Ut

N
7
fD
a
..
3
-i
ti
z
o
0
z
0
o '-'
T ,..
