preferred location geologically because it was on the centerline of the
• proposed road.
The program at which we finally arrived included the following trenches.
A - centerline of road between Sta. 39+00 and Sta. 39+40
1 - Sta. 57+80, left 115 feet
2 - Sta. 59+70, left 30 feet
3 - across and normal to centerline at Sta. 57+25
6 - about parallel to centerline of road between Sta. 60+85 and Sta.
61+05, left about 20 feet (in the field this station was
reoriented from N-S to N30W)
7 - roughly parallel to the centerline of the road bet~deen Sta. 59+00
and Sta. 59+40, right 35 to 40 feet.
Each trench was nominally to be 40 feet long and three to four feet wide.
• Trench Cutting
A D-5 Caterpiller bulldozer from the mine was used to prepare access to
trench locations that were not on an existing trail. A John Deere 690D-LC
backhoe with a 30-foot reach was contracted by PCC to dig the trenches. The
access was prepared and the trenches were all dug on May 6, 1992. All trenches
were dug between 1300 and 1450 when the operator was released. The backhoe
operator was instructed to cut benches that would facilitate access and
logging. He also, in most cases cut narrow ramps along the sides of the
trenches between benches, also facilitating access.
Logging Trenches
The procedure followed in logging the trenches was to measure by tape the
• length of each trench, determine the grade of landslope along the cut, measure
2
