• ~ ~ Sampling Methods ~~ ~ ~. • ~ ~ ~ ~ '
Cover. Cover will be.measured by the point-intercept method. The point-intercept transect
' will, be at'least 30.meters Idng with a[ least 50 points taken, - ~ ~.
•
Production. Production data will be collected through the use of the harvest method. ~~All
herbaceous vegetation occurring within the vertical projection of a 1/2m' to 1m' plot will,be
harvested~as discussed in Sanipling~Parameters. ~ ~ ~ ~~ ~~
Woody Planf Densities. Woody plant densities will be -measured in a.2m x 50m 1100rri'1
.quadrat. ~Reference~area sampling (if conducted) will use'a im x'50m ISOm'1 plot. ~ ~ ,
Species'List. The species list will.be developed from anyspring~flora investigations and from
' .information gathered during peak growing'season sampling. ~ ~~
," Samplinglntensity Because of thevarying degree of dis[urbarice or size ofreclaimed areas
from year to year, a reclaimed samplingarea size cannot be specified. Therefore,a minimum
,~ .of one (11 sarimple for. each ten 1101 acres~of reclaimed area will be located in each block of ~~
reclamationor.until sample adequacy is achieved. Generally, at-least 15 samples are collected
' ~ . unless the sampled block is small. ~ ~A~~ particular block ~ will ~be identified by year.~~of ~ seeding.
Sampling locations will generally be established through the use of random point selection.
This method may be modified when it.-becomes. apparent that a more even distribution or -
allocation of sampling points would be desirable, particularly if the reclamation block is. split
~~ into a number of subunits. " Since' the ~ monitoring data are intended, for • evaluation of
' ~ reclamation :methods and performance of revegetation stands and not for strict statistical
analysis, 4his "allocation" method of sample point selection should be .acceptable., A sampling
~.~ ~' point is that location in the study area .where the :production,.cover, or woody plant density
measurements arecollected:
'. ~ References Area Monitoring The extended reference area, or portions thereof, will be
„periodically monitored for cover, production, and species presence using similar methods at '
intensities appropriate to the comparisons planned.
