germination of seed will occur over a longer period of time. This will
allow other species in the reclamation mix an additional edge in •
establishment and growth. Finally, crosses between Medic:a o sativa and
Medicago falcata tend to result in sterile hybrids. This may partially
aid in controlling the excessive establishment of additional alfalfa
plants over time.
Information related to Medica o falcata is not extensive even though
this species was the basis for the first alfalfa varieties developed in
the U.S. many years ago. The information presented above was developed
from the attached information and discussions with Dr. Courrier of the
Alfalfa Laboratory at New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, IJew
Mexico.
COMFIENT:
A.3. Comment nine (9) of the PAR dealt with the lack of shrub
individuals and the potential long term problems associated with
C achieving woody plant density. PCC broke its reply into two areas: •
The measures that have been implemented to date; and, the measures
proposed for the future. The measures implemented to date have
been a continual increase in shrub species planted and
modifications to the seed mixture to balance competition among
species. The list of "...supplemental shrub seed used in years
1981-1486" appears to be somewhat inaccurate. Of the twelve (12)
species listed in 1981, only one (1) is a shrub species
(winterfat). Also, of the eight (8) species listed in 1982, again
only one (1) is a shrub species (antelope bitterbrush). For years
1984-1986, the listing does represent shrub species. PCC should
modify the introductory paragraph to denote that the listing
includes both shrub and forb species.
The commitments made by PCC in "Measures to be Implemented" (Pages
29-30) provide a wide range of methods that should assist in
increasing and verifying tV,e shrub component at the Seneca II Mine.
However, the proposal by PCC "...that certain areas be exempted •
from seeding of the primary seed mix in order to provide
36
