This is
- a guide for your use in making alfalfa recommendations to land users. Some are
more winter hardy or more adapted to dry land plantings and some have proven to be
good mixes with pasture grasses in various cases. Others even fit into more than
one situation.
Host of the old standbys like Vernal,,Ranger, and Ladak are still being used and
are still good species to plant. Other varieties such as Apollo, Anchor, and Titan
are just now being tryed in certain locations throughout the Northwestern part
of Colorado.
~ If you are asked to evaluate a new stand of alfalfa, use the following information
~. to make this evaluation. In new seedings of alfalfa, you should see at least
ten or more plants per square foot. As time goes on, this figure should reduce
itself downward to approximately three plants per square foot.
On all• alfalfa plantings which we are involved with, remember to impress on the
cooperator the importance of a good seedbed, especially if they are new in the game
of raising alfalfa. This factor alone can either make you or break you when planting
alfalfa.
Last, I have igcluded a few brief descriptions that were available from the Colorado
Crop Variety Recommendations, handbook developed by Colorado State University in
Fort Collins. I have also copied a couple summaries on alfalfa trials ran by the
C.S.U. experimental stations.
When more information becomes available on alfalfa varieties, I will update the
attached list and sent it out.
a1~ ~,~i~o-r--~-
Charles A.
